Gentle on the Gut: How Bone Broth Supports Easier Digestion
by Bon Sip
When your digestion is unsettled, eating can start to feel like a guessing game. Some days are fine. Other days, even simple meals leave you bloated, uncomfortable or tired. For generations, people have turned to the same quiet remedy on those days: a warm cup of broth.
Here is why bone broth is so gentle on the digestive system, and how we make ours to be as easy on the gut as possible.
Why bone broth is easy on the gut
- It's already broken down. Slow simmering does much of the work your body would otherwise have to do. A warm, nourishing liquid asks very little of a tired digestive system.
- It's rich in collagen and gelatin. Long cooking draws collagen from the bones, which becomes gelatin in the broth. Gelatin and amino acids like glycine and glutamine are often credited with supporting the lining of the gut.
- It's warm. Many people with sensitive digestion find warm foods and drinks more comfortable than cold ones.
- It hydrates. Broth gives you fluid and minerals at the same time.
The herbs we chose for digestion
Every Bon Sip broth is made with a purpose. Our Chicken FODMAP Bone Broth was made to be easy on the gut, so every herb in it was chosen for digestion:
- Lemon balm: traditionally used to soothe the gut and calm the mind
- Ginger and turmeric: warming roots traditionally used to support digestion and calm inflammation
- Astragalus and codonopsis: tonic roots used in traditional Chinese herbalism for energy and digestion
- Rosemary, thyme and sage: aromatic herbs traditionally used to ease digestion
And because it is made without onion or garlic, it suits people following a low FODMAP diet. Our Roasted Beef Bone Broth also includes ginger, fennel seed and star anise, warming spices traditionally used to ease gas and bloating. It does contain onion and garlic, so if you are low FODMAP, the chicken broth is the one for you.
Simple habits for easier digestion
- Start the day with a warm cup. Sipping broth on an empty stomach is a gentle way to wake up your digestion.
- Sip slowly. Hold the mug, breathe, and take your time. Digestion starts with slowing down.
- Have a cup between meals instead of a heavy snack.
- Cook with it. Use broth in place of water for rice, grains and soups so every meal carries a little extra nourishment.
- Notice what works. Everyone's gut is different. A simple food and symptom note helps you learn what your body loves.
We made our broths for anyone who has ever felt let down by their own digestion. We hope a daily cup brings you comfort, ease and a little more peace at the table.
